Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji

Celtic Football Club made history in Scotland by winning both the men’s and women’s football leagues over the weekend.

More Details

Celtic FC Women have won the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL 1) league title for the first time in their history after a dramatic 1-0 victory over Hibernian at Celtic Park.

Their goal-difference advantage over Rangers meant any kind of win would deliver the silverware on the final day.

It was a nervy and difficult 90 minutes for Celtic as their title rivals quickly built up a commanding lead over Partick Thistle at Broadwood, eventually winning 4-0.

Celtic found it difficult to fashion clear-cut chances as the tension ramped up with the scoreline deadlocked at 0-0. Then, there was a wonderful moment as the clock ticked towards the death.

The ever-impressive Amy Gallacher weaved her way through defenders in the box and fired a low shot into the back of the net.

Celtic are now the first club in Scottish football history to win the men’s and women’s title in the same season.

Meanwhile...

Celtic FC Women's Head Coach, Elena Sadiku and captain, Kelly Clark have both thanked the Celtic support for their backing of the squad throughout this monumental campaign.

"This is a historic day for Celtic, for the Women’s team, and for women’s football in Scotland, and we are all absolutely delighted to have won the SWPL title – the first-ever league success for this club," said Sadiku on the club website.

"Winning a league title is the most difficult thing to do in football, having to face so many challenges in the course of a season, but come the end of the campaign, the team that finishes top of the table can rightly claim to be the best in the country – and Celtic are the best team in Scotland!

"This historic achievement is the result of so much hard work from everyone at the club, and it is something we can all enjoy and celebrate because it is a collective effort.

"The players have been incredible from the moment I arrived at Celtic and they should be very proud of what they have done.

"They work hard every single day in order to improve, as individuals and as a team, and they have shown a real willingness to learn and to implement what it was we wanted to do. Today, they have got their reward for everything they have put into this season."

Captain Kelly Clark said: "This is a moment that we have all dreamt of, and something that we have worked so hard to achieve, so to have won the league title for the first time in Celtic’s history is a proud moment for the club and for all of us who are part of this incredible team.

"I have been at Celtic for over 11 years now, and I love playing for this club. Our women’s team has come a long way over the past few years and we’ve enjoyed previous trophy success in both the League Cup and the Scottish Cup, while also competing in the Champions League.

"However, winning the league has always been the target, and it feels amazing to have managed to become the Scottish champions."
