“In the club and on the bench, we all believe in him,” Correa told RTVE in an interview. “No one has doubts.”
Correa has been at Atlético since 2014 and has a close relationship with Cholo. He is having his best season ever under Simeone. He is one of the few Rojiblancos who has shown true progress and growth in what has been a dreadful season, one in which Atleti could finish outside LaLiga’s top four for the first time since 2011/12.
“Many players have come and gone, but Cholo is still here and continues to compete every year, even including this ‘down’ season,” Correa said. “Cholo will stay here for many years to come.”
At least publicly, club president Enrique Cerezo shares Correa’s confidence in the coach.
“We are going to have Diego Simeone for a while,” Cerezo told Cadena COPE on Monday. “It would be neither logical nor fair to look for another coach.”
Ernesto Valverde and Marcelino Garca Toral have been connected with Atlético, with Cadena SER claiming last week that difficulties between Simeone and sporting director Andrea Berta could result in the manager’s post being open this summer. Cholo, on the other hand, has the board’s complete support, and Cerezo even believes the 2021/22 season can be successful.
“It has not crossed our minds that Simeone would stop being Atlético’s manager,” he said. “He is an important asset to the club that we must maintain.
“I don’t think there will be a crisis at Atleti. We are still the league champions, we can finish in the top four, and try to go far in the Champions League.”
In the Champions League’s last 16, Atlético Madrid will meet Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United on Wednesday. Atleti has reached the knockout stages of the Champions League eight times in nine seasons under Simeone. The Colchoneros had only reached the knockout stage of the Champions League (and the European Cup before that) seven times prior to Cholo’s appointment two days before Christmas 2011.

Today, Atletico Madrid will host Manchester United at the Wanda Metropolitano in a Champions League last 16 match that is impossible to predict. Neither team is in good form, despite the fact that they are both traditional heavyweights.
Despite being the defending champions of La Liga, Atlético Madrid are presently fifth in the standings, tied on points with fourth-placed Barcelona. They’re 15 points behind Real Madrid, their nearest rival. Their last home game ended in a 1-0 loss to bottom-placed Levante, but they bounced back to beat Osasuna 3-0 the next weekend.
United are in a similar position in the Premier League. They’re fourth in the league table, four points clear of fifth-placed West Ham United but four behind third-placed Chelsea and a whopping 17 off league leaders and city rivals Manchester City.
