Written By Onyeka Daniel

Chelsea have all but agreed to own a part of French club, Strasbourg as they get ready to create an enabling environment for the number of young players that they’ve been purchasing.

More Details

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital have never shied away from discussing their desire to build a new multi-club phenomenon, and the Chelsea owners have now begun that quest with the purchase of a significant stake in Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

It’s taken a year, but Chelsea look to be finally on the verge of launching us into the multi-club-verse, with various media reports claiming that an acquisition of a stake in French top division club RC Strasbourg has been finalized and completed. Reports differ in just how big this stake might be, but it sounds like it’s at least 40% or more but it’s definitely not a full 100%.

So it’s likely a controlling stake if not quite full control, which should indeed mean that they are now part of this Chelsea Football Group idea that the new owners put front and center as one of their big initiatives after their takeover.

More importantly, this is being done with UEFA’s blessing and support and is only following the precedent set by the likes of Red Bull (Leipzig, Salzburg, NYRB, etc) and City Football Group (Manchester City, NYC FC, Palermo, many others).

There’s reports that they aren’t done yet and will now shift their attentions to Rio Ave in the Portuguese top division next. While the Blues will likely look to use Strasbourg as a development side for their growing pool of young talents, similar to the Red Bull or City Football Group methods, the French side have a number of intriguing players who Chelsea should be looking at immediately.

There are about 5 exciting players at the Ligue 1 club, Habib Diallo, 24-year-old Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, 19-year-old midfielder Habib Diarra, 19-year-old Ismael Doukoure and centre-back Alexander Djiku.

But Diallo seems like the player that could be useful to Chelsea at the moment after scoring 20 goals in Ligue 1 last season, finishing tied for fourth in the division’s scoring chart despite the fact that the club barely escaped relegation.

Meanwhile…

Chelsea striker, Romelu Lukaku has has reportedly declined another lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia as he insists on prolonging his time with Inter Milan. After failed move at Chelsea, Belgian star made a return back to Italy last summer.

But with his loan expiring at the end of the month, the player’s future is once again the object of discussion. According to reports from Italy, the 30-year-old had an offer on the table from a Saudi club, proposing 100 million euros as net wages for the next three years.

The report further claimed that the player’s suitors gradually raised the figures in their attempts to convince him. Yet, Lukaku wasn’t convinced as he only wants a return to Inter Milan, amidst another reported interest from city rivals, AC Milan, the player is ready to dig in and demand for a move to the Nerazzurri.

Some of his teammates have already made the big money move to Saudi Arabia with Kalidou Koulibaly, Hakim Ziyech and Edouard Mendy moving to the Middle East, while Chelsea have managed to offload a total of 6 players so far (Mateo Kovacic, Ngolo Kante and Kai Havertz), Mason Mount, Lukaku, Trevor Chalobah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are expected to follow them out of the exit door but the jury is yet to be out on Connor Gallagher and possibly Noni Madueke.
