Chelsea To Go All In For Sevilla Defender After Losing Two Defenders

Written By Onyeka Daniel

Chelsea have found themselves in a bit of a logjam lately after the British government froze their account as part of sanctions after Russia invaded Ukraine.

It should be recalled that Roman Abramovich, who was the owner of the club had to give up his position too because of his close ties to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.

Due to the sanctions, the club have been unable to open contract talks with their players, especially those with expiring contracts, which may be part of the reason why Danish defender, Andres Christensen had agreed to join Barcelona while German defender, Antonio Rudiger also recently agreed to sign for Real Madrid, all on a free transfer.

With the sales of the club expected to be finalized in the next few weeks, the club will be free from all sanctions too and they’re said to have identified several targets that should be signed.

Last season, the Blues were close to signing Sevilla defender, Jules Kounde but they baulked as the Andalusian club refused to lower their demands, asking the English Premier League side to pay his full release clause (€80 million).

With the new owners expected to inject more funds into the club once the takeover is complete, the Blues are expected to make another move for the French international and this time, they’re ready to meet the said valuation.

Kounde, 23, has made 129 appearances for Los Nervionenses since joining the club, contributing eight goals and three assists. He’s also become a full French international, earning nine caps.

Sevilla, with 28 goals conceded, boast the meanest defence in La Liga and Kounde is a large part of that. Real Madrid were also said to be interested in Kounde, but their recent acquisition of Rudiger may be enough reinforcement that they need for their defense.

Meanwhile…

Real Madrid are said to be undecided whether to renew the contract of their defender, Marcelo or let him leave the club as a free agent in June, unlike in the case of Gareth Bale and Isco, who are surely leaving the club in the summer.

After their La Liga title triumph at the weekend, the Los Blancos have a date with Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu, for the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final match.

The club will reportedly take a decision on the player once the season is wrapped up as they look to qualify for the final of the UCL and lift the trophy too.
