Chicago Fire now have a Designated Player slot thanks to this move. Their remaining DPs are new scorer Hugo Cuypers and star midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.

“After many discussions with Jairo and the coaching staff, we all agreed that this was the best decision for the player and the club at this time,” sporting director Georg Heitz said in a release.

“I’d like to thank Jairo for his contributions to the Chicago Fire and wish him all the best for the future.”

The 23-year-old Torres first signed with the Fire in February 2022 as a Young Designated Player after leaving Liga MX team Atlas FC. In 36 games (14 starts), he scored 0 goals and 2 assists, never quite lived up to his $6 million transfer fee.

Torres is reportedly set to join FC Juárez in Mexico. Chicago Fire’s new season begins at the Philadelphia Union on February 24.
