The Chicago Stars have secured one of their cornerstone players for the long term, announcing that defender Sam Staab has signed a contract extension that will keep her in the Windy City through the 2029 NWSL season.

More Details

“I’m excited to sign an extension with the club,” Staab said in the official release. “I feel like there’s unfinished business here — it’s an amazing sports city and my teammates and I have so much more to offer. I look forward to seeing how we can help push the club even further as we enter a new chapter for the Stars, and make our fans proud as we represent them and this great city on the field.”

General manager Richard Feuz praised Staab’s consistency and leadership, describing her as “an undeniably important part of our team since her arrival.”
“We are fortunate to have a player of Sam’s caliber define what it means to be a Chicago Star,” Feuz said. “She embodies the standards we are setting as a club and the values our fans expect — commitment, quality, and pride.”

A Record of Reliability

Since joining Chicago in January 2024 via trade from the Washington Spirit, Staab has been a model of durability and excellence. In her debut season, she helped anchor the Stars’ best-ever start to a campaign, earning Best XI of the Month honors in both March/April and May 2024.

That same season, Staab made history by becoming the first player in NWSL history to start and appear in 100 consecutive regular-season matches, joining the league’s exclusive Century Club on May 19, 2024. Despite a season-ending injury in July, she finished with one goal, two assists, 95 clearances, and 72 recoveries across 16 appearances.

The Comeback and Continued Impact

After an astonishing eight-month recovery, Staab returned to action in the 2025 season opener, seamlessly reclaiming her spot in the starting lineup. She reached 10,000 career regular-season minutes in May and has continued to anchor the Stars’ defense while adding attacking flair.

Her performances in August — highlighted by two assists in teammate Ludmila’s hat trick and a league-leading defensive stat line — earned her another NWSL Best XI of the Month honor. Staab then opened September in style, scoring Chicago’s first-ever goal from a direct free kick in a 5–2 win over Orlando Pride.

Heading into the season finale, Staab leads the league in blocks (23) and ranks third in clearances (158) while contributing two goals, four assists, and a team-high 1,117 completed passes in 2025.

Looking Ahead

For the Stars, locking in one of the league’s top defenders represents both stability and ambition as the club continues its evolution.

Staab and the Chicago Stars will close out their 2025 regular season on November 2 at SeatGeek Stadium, with the club eyeing a strong finish to cap off another milestone year.
