The Reds, managed by Arne Slot, won the double-header at Anfield with scores of 4-1 and 3-2, but their victories were overshadowed by a shortage of available defenders.

With the new season just around the corner, the team is anxiously awaiting the fitness status of two key defenders.

Liverpool have a busy week ahead. They’ll play Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday before starting their 2025-26 season against AFC Bournemouth on Friday, August 15.

The Merseyside-based club are short on defenders, having sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen and with Joe Gomez out with an Achilles injury.

During Liverpool’s match against Athletic Bilbao, captain Virgil van Dijk was out with an illness and Alisson Becker was absent for personal reasons. Coach Arne Slot hopes that both will return for the game against Palace, but he is unsure about the availability of Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley.

“But until now we have stayed fit as we wanted to be and new signings came in so they got adjusted to what we want. Looking forward first of all to today and then to the next weeks. Virgil normally not.Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley, it’s going to be tight. Alisson will be back in time as well.”

Arne Slot started midfielder Trey Nyoni at center-back in the opening match against Bilbao. The 18-year-old, who has had a strong pre-season, appeared to be dealing with a minor hamstring problem before being substituted.

Arne Slot was happy with his team’s performance against Athletic Bilbao, a team that finished fourth in La Liga. He noted that his team created numerous scoring opportunities and scored a total of seven goals over two matches, even though they missed some chances.
