Canada will face defending champions Argentina at the MetLife Stadium on Tuesday in a replay of the 2024 Copa America opener, with the goal of becoming the second CONCACAF team to advance to the competition’s final. La Albiceleste and Canada eliminated their respective opponents via penalty shootouts to advance to the semis.

Argentina defeated Ecuador in the quarterfinals largely due to Emiliano Martinez’ brilliance in goal. Lionel Scaloni’s men have advanced past this stage in seven of their previous eight attempts. This will be their fifth consecutive trip to the Copa America semi-finals.

Argentina would be the first reigning champions to reach back-to-back finals if they manage to eliminate Canada in the semi-final. Since Romania defeated them 3-2 in the round of 16 of the 1994 World Cup, Argentina haven’t lost in regulation time at a major tournament held in USA. On Tuesday, Argentina have the opportunity to extend their unbeaten streak to ten games in all competitions.

Canada have improved significantly since losing their opening game of the competition (2-0) to La Albiceleste. Jesse Marsch’s team are the third in the CONCACAF region to reach this stage after the likes of Mexico and Honduras.

Not since Mexico advanced to the competition’s final in the 2001 Copa America, where they lost to Colombia 1-0 after overcoming Uruguay 2-1 in the semis, has a country in the CONCACAF region advanced this far. The Canucks have not conceded a goal in the first half of any of their last nine competitive games.

Head To Head

Argentina have defeated Canada in each of their previous meetings by an aggregate score of 7-0.

Key Performers

When paired with Messi up top, Lautaro Martinez can score goals as well. The Inter Milan striker scored in Argentina’s 2-0 group-stage victory over Canada, and he’ll be trying to score again.

One of the world’s most promising young players is Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich star’s speed and dribbling prowess make him a continual threat along the left wing. His goal will be to disrupt the rhythm of Argentina’s defence.

Many pundits expect a routine win for Argentina. La Albiceleste have been heavily tipped to defeat Canada because of their potent offensive and defensive structure. However, Canada could make things difficult for Argentina due to their all-round resilience.
