Costa Rica 2022: France Eliminate Canada As The Netherlands Clip America’s Wings

After a 1-0 defeat to Nigeria in the opening Group C game of Costa Rica 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, France returned to winning ways with a 3-1 breakthrough over Canada on Monday at the Estadio National de Costa Rica, San Jose.

Another cagey first half that didn’t produce any goal preceded the second half which birthed four goals.

First, it was Fangnaba Folquet who scored France’s first goal of the tournament in the 51st minute off an assist from her PSG teammate, Oceane Hurtre.

Magnaba Folquet doubled the lead for the young Le Bleues in the 66th minute from Manssita Traore’s assist.

Esther Mbakem-Niaro converted France’s third goal in the 89th minute before Olivia Smith pulled a goal back for Canada in the additional minutes of the second half.

France occupy the second position in Group C with three points, the same points as its next opponent, South Korea.

Nigeria tops the group with a maximum of six points from two games and will face already eliminated Canada in the last group game.

The Netherlands bounced back from its opening game defeat to hand the United States of America (USA) a 3-0 defeat.

Sanne Koopman scored the first goal of the game for The Netherlands in the 32nd minute.

Dana Foederer scored The Netherlands’ second goal in the 55th minute before Marit Auee completed the scoring for the European side.

The Netherlands were reduced to ten players after a red card was handed to Samantha van Diemen in the 82nd minute but the numerical disadvantage didn’t prevent the team from claiming victory over USA.

Japan top Group D with six points ahead of The Netherlands (3 points,) USA (3 points), and Ghana (0 point).
