Costa Rica 2022: Group D Teams Make Last Four As Nigeria Crash Out

Two (2) teams that qualified from Group D have qualified for the semi-final of Costa Rica 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup as the quarter-finals ended last weekend.

The Netherlands defeated two-time finalists and Africa’s remaining representatives, Nigeria’s Falconets 2-0 to make it to the semi-final.

Two (2) first-half goals propelled The Netherlands to a 2-0 win over the West African team which handed Nigeria its first win of the tournament.

PSV’s Zera Hulswit scored the first goal of the game in the eleventh minute of play before Ajax’s Ziva Henry converted the second goal for The Netherlands in the 33rd minute.

The Netherlands which suffered a 1-0 defeat to Japan in the group stage, finish second in Group D and successfully ended Nigeria’s unbeaten run and perfect record in the tournament.

The team will face Spain in the semi-final with the winner set to tackle either Brazil or Japan in the final.

Holders, Japan had to rely on the lottery of penalties to be able to upend France after an entertaining 3-3 draw in regulation time.

Yuzuki Yamamoto, Maika Hamano, and Aoba Fujino scored for Japan while Magnaba Folquet, Esther Mbakem-Niaro, and Megane Hoeltz converted France’s goals.

Japan prevailed 5-3 on penalties to qualify for the semi-final with Laurina Fazer missing France’s spot-kick as Japan converted all its five penalty kicks.

Japan will face Brazil in the semi-final on August 26, 2022, at the Estadio National de Costa Rica, San Jose.
