Costa Rica 2022: Japan Inflict Injury On Ghana As Nigeria Soar Into Quarter Final

Black Princess of Ghana suffered its second defeat in Costa Rica 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after a 2-0 loss to Japan.

United States of America had defeated Ghana 3-0 while Japan pipped The Netherlands 1-0 ahead of this second Group D encounter.

A cagey first half failed to produce any breakthrough as both sides sized themselves up.

In the second half, Maika Hamano opened the scoring for Japan from the penalty spot in the 62nd minute.

Ten minutes later, Maika Hamano once again scored Japan’s second goal from the penalty spot to double her side’s lead.

In a similar fashion to the opening game win where Nigeria had to rely on a late goal from Flourish Sabastine, Nigeria also had to rely on another later goal.

This time, FC Robo Queens’ Esther Onyenezide scored the winning goal within the last ten minutes of the game to win the game for the West African side.

Nigeria qualified for the quarter-final ahead of its final group game with Canada.

South Korea will face France in a bid to make it out of the group stage.
