Cristiano Ronaldo may be Manchester United’s top scorer this season with some vital goals scored both in the Champions League and the Premier League but is the Portuguese captain really doing any good to Manchester United’s cause?

The 36 year old was on the verge of signing for city rivals Manchester City before the intervention of Rio Ferdinand and Sir Alex Ferguson changed the situation of things and convinced the five time Ballon d’Or winner to return to the red half of the city.

Ronaldo has since gone on to score fourteen goals in twenty two appearances in all competitions but only he and not the club appears to be posting positive numbers.

The managerial shuffle at Old Trafford though hasn’t helped issues with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer relieved of his duties and Michael Carrick installed for a few games before an interim coach in Ralf Rangnick was hired until the end of the season.

There’s been rumours of unrest in the United dressing room with Ronaldo said to be at the height of it and players such as club captain Harry Maguire revolting against the club legend. Senior members of the squad do not seem to align with Rangnick’s preferred 4-2-2-2 formation with results on the down spin since the German tactician arrived.

Ronaldo is believed to be causing issues in the United dressing room with Manchester City appearing to have dodged a bullet by not signing the former Real Madrid attacker according to one time City striker Trevor Sinclair.

“I’m starting to think that Manchester City dodged a bullet by not signing Cristiano,” he told the talkSPORT Breakfast. “I really think that. “You look at some of the players who are really struggling for form at Man United, Sancho, Rashford.

“He’s got to know his role. You’re a footballer, hired by the football club, keep your mouth shut at times – that’s what you’ve got to do.

“I think he’s causing a lot of problems at the football club. Not just his lack of goals in recent times but the fact that Ole’s gone, and then Michael [Carrick] went in and dropped him for a game.

“I just feel it’s been one of those signings where it’s looked good, but it’s far from good.

“And, for me, one of the reasons I think he may not have considered Manchester City – and it wasn’t trophies, because he would have won silverware there – is because he didn’t want to be second fiddle to Pep.

“Whereas he could go into United and almost feel like he could bully Ole a little bit, obviously Carrick was a stand-in manager, and then Rangnick has gone in there.

“I think he just wants to do what he wants for him, and it’s not the best for the club.”

It is yet to be seen whether Sinclair’s assertions are actually true or it’s just the team as a whole that is not performing to their best.

Tottenham Hotspur coach, Antonio Conte has opened the door to a Christian Eriksen return after the Denmark international’s return to training following a cardiac arrest suffered while representing his country at EURO 2020.

The 2020/2021 Scudetto winner with Inter Milan has been on treatment and eventually had an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) fitted to regulate his heartbeat following his recovery.

The 29 year old has since returned to training with Switzerland club FC Chiasso and is ready to get back to playing, he also made his intention of representing his country come Qatar 2022 known but had his contract at Inter Milan rescinded due to Italy’s national Olympic committee rules against any player with an ICD participating in the league.

That, however, does not prevent him from playing in other countries with Antonio Conte open to resigning the midfielder whom he worked with at Inter Milan.

Asked if Eriksen could be seen again in the Spurs shirt, Conte replied. “It was great to see him on the pitch, to see that he is kicking the ball,” Conte said regarding footage of Eriksen training with Swiss club Chiasso.

“What happened this summer was not good, I was scared, and now to see him again ready to play football is great news.

“I think for Christian the door is always open.”

Eriksen managed 226 Premier League appearances for Spurs after signing from Ajax in 2013, scoring 51 goals and registering 62 assists.
