Crystal Palace Battle For UEL Spot, Appeal Filed Against ‘Unfair’ Demotion

Written By Albert Echatah

Crystal Palace has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to overturn their demotion to the Conference League.

More Details

This action follows a UEFA panel’s recommendation earlier this month to bar Palace from the Europa League, despite qualifying by winning the FA Cup last season.

The UEFA panel found that both Crystal Palace and Lyon of Ligue 1 violated UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations. CAS has stated that Palace’s appeal will undergo an expedited process, with a final decision expected by August 11, 2025.

However, this poses a challenge as the qualifying play-off draw for the Conference League, which will include the English participant, is scheduled for August 4, a week before the CAS decision.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has indicated that Nottingham Forest played a significant role in his club’s demotion from the Europa League to the Conference League.

He believes that if Forest hadn’t sought to claim Palace’s spot, the issue of multi-club ownership rules, which led to Palace’s expulsion, might not have been enforced so strictly.

“We’re led to believe that’s the issue,” Parish said. “If there wasn’t someone who wanted to get in as a consequence, then there wouldn’t be a problem.”

In response to this decision, angry Crystal Palace fans staged a protest at UEFA headquarters, delivering a suitcase filled with fake money.

This symbolic gesture, accompanied by a letter to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, aimed to highlight what they perceive as a contradiction between UEFA’s stated values of integrity and fairness, and its actual business practices. Palace is appealing the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
