The Pep Guardiola led side went on a thirteen game winning streak before being held by Southampton.

City have however slowed down with Liverpool winning their last six in the league to close down the gap on the leaders after it appeared before that they were just on a cruise to their title defence.

Despite Liverpool’s mounting pressure, Darren Bent has insisted that Manchester City’s defensive solidity will see them through to the title defence.

Speaking on Tuesday’s talkSPORT Breakfast show Darren Bent said: “They [Liverpool] can catch them but I don’t think they will,” Bent began.

“Manchester City, against Everton, got fortunate with the decision because it was handball, but they’ve won that game so you have to put that to bed.

“We’ve seen Manchester City do this, we’ve seen them get beat, and then go on incredible runs and that’s my only thing.”

The 38-year-old former-pro went on to explain that although he thinks Liverpool will go on to impress and make it hard for City, Guardiola’s back line will make the difference in the end.

He said: “I think Liverpool will continue to win games as well but Manchester City, defensively, are solid.

“I think they’ve conceded less goals than anybody but they can go on runs when they win ten or twelve games in a row.

“I think they need to do that, and they’ve been there and done that before. Them and Liverpool went toe to toe and had to keep winning games, and City did it, so.

“I think Liverpool will run them close, but I think City, in the Premier League, will just edge out Liverpool I think”.

Liverpool have a game to negotiate and should they win will close the gap to three points with a trip to the Etihad waiting.

Meanwhile…

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has asked reporters to stop asking questions about Ukraine following fresh questions over owner Roman Abrahamovic.

Chelsea’s foundation trustees are yet to assume control of the club as handed to them by owner Roman Abrahamovic due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Tuchel replied he had no more answers to give when asked about the situation in Ukraine and Abrahamovic’s contributions.

“Listen, listen, listen you have to stop, I’m not a politician,” Tuchel told a reporter.

“You have to stop, honestly, I can only repeat it and I feel bad to repeat it because I’ve never experienced war.

“So even to talk about it I feel bad because I’m very privileged – I sit here in peace. I do the best I can but you have to stop asking me these questions because I have no answers for you.”

He described the situation as horrible when quizzed about it on Tuesday: “It’s horrible. It’s horrible,” Tuchel said when asked about the war on Tuesday.

“There can’t be any other opinion about it, but why should we be more distracted by you. It’s out there. We know there are more important things out there. This will never change.

“Everyone in Europe has noise in their head that nobody likes. Still you try to come to work and try to do the best in your job as possible.”

When asked whether Abramovich should have a role in football, Tuchel responded: “It’s too much for me to answer. I am not aware of the details and the whole situation.

“There are situations much more important than football, this will never change. Situations like war are so much more important.”
