Despite Signing Young Striker, AC Milan Press Ahead For Guirassy

Written By Onyeka Daniel

After a positive start to the 2023-24 season, things have gone downhill for AC Milan, both in the League and in Europe, starting from their 5-1 Derby defeat to Inter Milan and the club has also struggled with injuries. The club management have identified a number of areas that needs reinforcement.

More Details

Especially the attack, which is why they’re taking concrete steps towards bringing in a new striker during the January transfer window. The Rossoneri are reportedly plotting a move to bring the prolific Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy to San Siro in the winter, but it’s not clear how this will affect their supposed move for Lille forward, Jonathan David in the summer.

The Guinean forward has been in immense form in front of goal in the first half of the Bundesliga season, finding the net on 16 occasions from just 11 appearances in the league. Currently, he is averaging 1.83 goals per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga, and is just two shy of European Golden Boot candidate and England captain Harry Kane, who has 18 goals from 12 matches with Bayern Munich.

Guirassy also has a €17m release clause in his contract, which is set to become active in January. Owing to his good form, reports suggests that Guirassy is keen to stay on with Stuttgart until the end of the season. However, at 27 years of age, and with plenty of interest across Europe, January may be the ideal time to secure a ‘big’ move.

Milan are certainly not the only interested team, as recent reports have suggested that Roma, as well as Premier League sides Newcastle and Manchester United have all enquired. However, Milan are in need of attacking reinforcements, and are still in need of a longer-term alternative to Olivier Giroud.

Calciomercato believes that Milan are pushing for Guirassy and that the January transfer window is the target. This is despite the fact that they’ve already secured the services of another striker. They have reportedly reached an agreement to sign 17-year-old starlet Matija Popovic as a free agent from Partizan.

Sky Sport Italia claims Popovic will move to Milan in January at the end of his contract with Partizan on December 31, 2023. Popovic will turn 18 on January 8, 2024, and will probably get playing time with Ignazio Abate’s Primavera squad although Pioli can already assess the Serbian forward during training sessions with the first team.

The 17-year-old can also play as an attacking midfielder or right winger, but his stats suggest he gives his best when playing close to the opponents’ goal. Popovic is a classic centre-forward. Right-footed and 1,93m tall, he has scored 21 goals in 25 appearances in the Kadetska Liga, Serbia’s youth division, last season.

Since arriving from AC Milan on a season-long loan deal, Matteo Gabbia has had an indifferent start to life at Villarreal. The Italian defender has featured 11 times for the Yellow Submarine so far this campaign, although he has failed to make a significant impact.

Since Marcelino Garcia Toral returned to Villarreal in November, Gabbia has played just 45 minutes (vs Maccabi Haifa). He was injured for matches against Zamora and Osasuna, but appeared as a half time substitute against the Israelis in the Europa League, before failing to feature against Sevilla recently.

Gabbia is contracted at Villarreal until the end of the season, but according to reports in Spain and Italy, he could be set for a return to Milan in January. It comes amid a centre-back injury crisis for the Italian giants, who have Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer, Mattia Caldara, Malick Thiaw all unavailable at the moment. Gabbia would not be a massive miss for Villarreal if he were to return to Milan during the winter.

But if he does go, a replacement would be required. Another report is suggesting that the club is interested in Bayern Munich player, Thomas Muller. After losing the veteran Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the end of the 2022-23 season, AC Milan are looking to bring a similar figure to the club, who could fill a vital role on and off the field. The report suggests that the 34-year-old wants to extend his stay with the German heavyweights until 2025.

However, with his contract set to expire in June 2024, if there is no agreement, the Diavolo will look to tempt him to join. From the World Cup in 2014 to the Champions League, Muller has seen and won it all, often playing a pivotal role too. With Stefano Pioli not opposed to a 4-2-3-1 formation this season – he provides extra coverage for the attacking midfielder position, which is an additional benefit.
