Diego Godin to leave Inter

Inter Milan have reached an agreement with Diego Godin for the termination of his contract according to Italian sources.

The Uruguay and Atletico Madrid legend joined the Nerazzurri just last summer as a free agent and did considerably well in the Inter Milan colours. However, budget constraints and his overall inability to settle into Antonio Conte’s three-man defensive system meant that the club had to let him go to look for a suitable alternative.

Cagliari had shown interest in the 34-year old as they look to provide Eusebio Di Francesco with an experienced centre back for the new season. Talks between the club and Godin had been going well with the club reportedly agreeing a three-year deal with the Uruguayan.

However, the Sardinian club had problems coughing out the 5-6 million euros in wages that Godin earns at Inter with reports claiming that they could only pay 2.5 million.

Inter have now agreed to give the former Atletico Madrid defender a severance pay which should be enough to facilitate the move. The move is expected to go through in the coming days as only Godin’s signature is missing

Godin’s move to Cagliari will also free up some space on Inter’s budget to enable them complete the signing of Chilean energetic midfielder, Arturo Vidal. There has been an agreement between both parties since last week but a move for one of Inter’s big earners was needed in order to complete the Vidal deal.
