Atletico Madrid deployed a staunch defensive tactics away to Manchester City on Tuesday night and were almost running away with a draw until the introduction of Phil Foden who found Kevin De Bruyne with a defence splitting pass to break the deadlock.
Simeone’s men limited City to just two shots on target in the close encounter and didn’t manage any shots on goal themselves, a tactical approach that has been vehemently condemned by Adrian Durham.
Speaking after the game, Durham said: “I’m going to call it as I see it: this Atletico Madrid side are an absolute disgrace.
“I’ll call them horrible, cheaty, anti-football, no desire to entertain. Simeone is a ref pest.
“The players are sneaky, out-housing, Sunday League wrong ‘uns.
The pundit as well urged Portuguese youngster Joao Felix to move away from the Wanda Metropolitano if he is to continue being a professional footballer.
“Atletico Madrid have no desire to play football whatsoever. If I were Joao Felix, I would ask for a transfer so I could continue being a professional footballer.
“Why anybody would want Simeone as their manager, I do not know.”
Whether or not Simeone’s approach is truly anti football will be confirmed in a fortnight when City visit the Wanda Metropolitano for the second leg tie.
