Monaco eased past Strasbourg at the Stade Louis-II, climbing to the top of the Ligue 1 table by claiming back-to-back victories to kick off their top-flight campaign for the first time since 2017/18.

An injury to an unfortunately-positioned bird was the most gripping piece of early action, but Takumi Minamino soon brought the focus back to football. The Japan international stole the ball high up the pitch and tried his luck from range, firing a low ball beyond the reach of Matz Sels for the game’s opener.

Chances remained at a premium for much of the first half, yet another moment of quality gave Monaco a two-goal cushion with half time approaching.

Caio Henrique delivered a teasing ball from deep, which allowed Minamino to ghost into the box and nod home his second goal of the season, surpassing his 2022/23 Ligue 1 tally in a single half of football.

Strasbourg had it all to do after the break, and were it not for the intervention of a sliding Ismaël Doukouré, Wissam Ben Yedder may have put the game to bed with his effort at the back post. However, minutes later, Ben Yedder made amends for his miss, receiving a first-time ball from Minamino before running through on goal and effectively ending the contest.

Le Racing were evidently not at the races and had Sels to thank for keeping the scoreline semi-respectable as he pushed Eliot Matazo’s strike around the post with 73 minutes on the clock.

Les Monégasques ultimately remained in control to see out a comfortable evening’s work, claiming a third consecutive H2H victory and maintaining new boss Adi Hütter’s 100% start to the domestic campaign.

As for Patrick Vieira’s Strasbourg, they miss the chance to open a Ligue 1 season with two wins for the first time in over 30 years, failing to build on a promising victory over Lyon last time out.
