DONE DEAL: Benfica Sign Jan Vertonghen

Nico Schira of La Gazzetta Dello Sport and Fabrizio Romano of Sky Italia both report that Benfica have completed the signing of Belgian defender, Jan Vertonghen.

The 33-year old defender left English club, Tottenham Hotspur after his contract with the club expired this summer and has joined the Portuguese side on a three-year deal.

Vertonghen will become Benfica’s third high profile signing after it was reported that they completed the signings of Gremio’s Brazilian winger, Everton Soares and former PSG striker, Edinson Cavani. This is in addition to the reappointment of former manager, Jorge Jesus who recently left Brazilian side, Flamengo .

Benfica lost out on the Portuguese league and Cup title to long time rivals, FC Porto in the 2019/20 season and are trying to improve the squad to boost their chances of winning the title next season.
