The Houston Dynamo took full advantage of Messi’s inability to play by winning a championship on his home turf.
More Details
The first-half goals from Griffin Dorsey and Amine Bassi helped Houston defeat Messi-less Inter Miami 2-1 on Wednesday night to win the U.S. Open Cup while NBA star James Harden, who is a member of the team’s ownership group, watched from the stands.
Inter Miami’s Josef Martinez scored in the last seconds of the second half, but it wasn’t enough, and Messi could only watch from the team bench.
Due to a leg problem, Messi was not on Inter Miami’s active squad for the game, which marked his fourth absence in his last five games for club and nation combined. It’s also uncertain whether Messi will stay out when Inter Miami starts its attempt to qualify for Major League Soccer’s playoffs this weekend.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner missed the team’s 1-1 tie at Orlando on Sunday due to a leg injury that forced him to leave a game against Toronto in the first half on September 20.
He had missed three full games in the previous two weeks—two for club and one for country—and the fact that he missed a final on Wednesday implies the issue may be more serious than the team has said. Jordi Alba, another of Inter Miami’s lauded midseason additions, is also out for Wednesday. Due to a leg injury, Alba’s participation in forthcoming matches is uncertain.

John Herdman has been officially named the new coach of MLS based club Toronto FC. Starting on October 1st, the 48-year-old will take over as Toronto FC’s next head coach in the MLS.
Herdman became the coach of Canada in January 2018 before leading the North American giants to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, their first appearance in 36 years.
“I’m keen to start this new opportunity with Toronto FC,” he said. “It’s the right time for a new challenge.” Toronto fired former head coach Bob Bradley in June and are currently towards the bottom of the MLS standings.
