Argentina took on Saudi Arabia in the first fixture of the day and of Group C at the Lusail Stadium.
Lionel Messi led the two time champions out from the tunnel and they started the morning on a strong foot by creating the early openings in the game.
It was not long before they made the Saudi Arabian team pay as Messi converted from the spot in the tenth minute following a penalty awarded after the VAR intervened for shirt pulling in the area.
The Albiceleste had the ball in the back of the net on three other occasions but were offside in each of those moves thanks to the Asians’ well coordinated high line defensive set up.
The half finished with Argentina in the lead with Saudi Arabia also haven given a good fight despite trailing.
However, it took just eight minutes of the restart for the Herve Renard led side to turn the tie around through goals from Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al Dawsari.
The Falcons defended resolutely and compactly and high made Argentina unable to break them down.
The less fancied side did however maintain their composure to see out the win and hand Argentina the worst possible start to their campaign.
The second game of the group between Mexico and Poland ended in a drab draw as Robert Lewandowski had his penalty saved by Guillermo Ochoa in the second half.

Defending champions France got their campaign off to the best possible start as they put four goals past a hapless Australia.
The Asian side took the lead via Craig Goodwin in the ninth minute before Adrien Rabiot drew France level in the 27th minute.

Olivier Giroud then scored off a Rabiot assist to put France ahead before the halftime break.
Kylian Mbappe and another Olivier Giroud goal in the second half ensured France scored four goals on the night.
Denmark had earlier in the day been held by African side Tunisia in the other group game with the next round of matches pairing Denmark against France while Tunisia take on Australia.
