Emergency Meeting That Could Decide The Fate Of Ivan Juric At Roma

Written By Onyeka Daniel

It is far from an ideal situation at Roma currently as the team continues to struggle both in the League and in Europe and this could eventually lead to the dismissal of their current coach, Ivan Juric, which would mean that they would have gone through three different managers in one season, that is if they don’t recall Daniele De Rossi back to the role.

More Details

Fans supported the team during an away Europa League game at Union Saint-Gilloise but sent the players away after the final whistle and a 1-1 draw. Around 1,200 Giallorossi supporters travelled to Brussels for the fixture, so the team didn’t lack support away from home. However, another disappointing result on the pitch upset the travelling fans, who ‘whistled and insulted’ the team when players went under the away sector to wave at their supporters.

Eloquent gestures suggested the team to leave the pitch, so the Giallorossi players quickly returned inside the tunnel. For Juric, he surprisingly dropped Mats Hummels for a Europa League game, and according to Corriere dello Sport, the German centre-back is ready to leave the capital in January. The 2014 Germany World Cup winner was expected to replace the unavailable Evan N’dicka against Union Saint-Gilloise.

But the former Torino manager surprisingly picked Bryan Cristante instead, adapting the Italian midfielder to a centre-back role. According to the report, Juric’s announcement in the dressing room ‘shocked’ the players, who even thought they had misunderstood their coach.Juric had said last week that he saw Hummels as a backup to N’dicka, but the ex-Borussia Dortmund star remained on the bench.

“It is a technical decision. I always think of fielding the team with the best chance to win. It is a technical decision for tonight,” Juric explained. Hummels joined Roma on a free transfer in September, signing a €2.5m-a-year contract until the end of the season. According to the report, the 35-year-old is already tempted to leave the club in the January transfer window as he has a few options in the Bundesliga.

However, it remains to be seen what will happen with Juric as the international break approaches. The Giallorossi have only won four games from 11 under his guidance, meaning that the coach’s future remains highly uncertain. In a related development, Dan and Ryan Friedkin are expected to arrive in Italy this weekend ahead of a series meetings with various members of Roma’s management team.

This will include the coach, team and directors, according to the same source. The Friedkins (along with business associate Marc Watts, will ‘take stock’ of the current situation at Roma, from both sporting and commercial perspectives) will arrive at Ciampino airport in Rome on Saturday ahead of a scheduled visit. The report suggests that Roma are looking for a ‘turning point’.

This is after a summer of spending, while having a rocky start to the 2024-25 season on and off the pitch. The Giallorossi are currently 12th in Serie A with just three wins from their opening 11 league matches, and currently sit in 20th in the Europa League standings with five points from their first four matches of the season. There has also been recent unrest surrounding coach, who was only appointed in September.
