The multicoloured St. George’s Cross on the back of the collar of the new Nike strip has drawn criticism from a number of football-related and non-football people.

The Three Lions will don the kit for their matches at Wembley on Saturday against Brazil and three days later against Belgium in a friendly. Nike dubbed the new design “playful,” but a number of people, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, have expressed disapproval and demanded that it be taken down.

The FA maintains that the red, navy, light blue, and purple St. George’s Cross is “meant as a tribute to the 1966 World Cup winning team” and has defended the jersey, which went on sale at the beginning of the week.

The England men’s team will wear the kit twice in the coming week in addition to competing at the European Championships in Germany this summer, when they hope to win their first major title since 1966.

‘The new England 2024 Home kit has a number of design elements which were meant as a tribute to the 1966 World Cup winning team,’ a statement from the FA read.

‘The coloured trim on the cuffs is inspired by the training gear worn by England’s 1966 heroes, and the same colours also feature on the design on the back of the collar.

‘It is not the first time that different coloured St George’s cross-inspired designs have been used on England shirts. We are very proud of the red and white St George’s cross – the England flag.

Manchester United have announced that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s official 27.7% takeover of the team in exchange for a £1.3 billion agreement has now been completed.

Ratcliffe said: ‘To become co-owner of Manchester United is a great honour and comes with great responsibility.

‘This marks the completion of the transaction, but just the beginning of our journey to take Manchester United back to the top of English, European and world football, with world-class facilities for our fans. Work to achieve those objectives will accelerate from today.’
