This result allowed United to surpass Palace and move into the top six of the Premier League standings, while simultaneously ending the Eagles’ impressive 12-match unbeaten home league run.

Despite Crystal Palace rarely conceding the first goal this season, they nearly fell behind immediately when goalkeeper Dean Henderson had to make a crucial save on Casemiro from a Diogo Dalot long throw. United’s early threat was limited, however, and the first half was characterized by defensive discomfort for Manchester United.

Crystal Palace began to apply significant pressure, with Jean-Philippe Mateta missing two early chances created by defensive errors. Palace’s persistent attack led to a penalty when Leny Yoro fouled Mateta in the box. Mateta initially scored but had to retake the penalty due to a double-touch.

He successfully converted on the second attempt, giving Oliver Glasner’s side a deserved lead going into halftime. This was Mateta’s seventh successful penalty of the season, and his 17th Premier League goal of 2025, a total second only to Erling Haaland.

Manchester United overcame a tough start—having failed to score in their last four Premier League meetings against their opponent—to secure a vital 2-1 away win.

Despite the unfavorable omens, Manchester United came out re-energized after the break. They quickly equalized within ten minutes of the second half thanks to Joshua Zirkzee, who spectacularly ended a 24-game league goal drought. He met a pass from Fernandes with a brilliant volley into the near post from a tight angle.

Set-pieces proved to be Manchester United’s most effective weapon throughout the match. Just after the hour mark, another free-kick completed the turnaround. Fernandes teed up Mason Mount, whose powerful shot went under a broken defensive wall and into the near post, sparking celebrations among the traveling fans.

Crystal Palace was then forced to chase the game, but the visitors Manchester United managed the final stages effectively. They held on for only their second away league win in 12 games, and just their fourth in the last 27 Premier League trips to London. This victory was a perfect recovery for Ruben Amorim’s side following a tough loss to Everton.

In contrast, Crystal Palace have now surrendered a lead to lose 2-1 in two consecutive matches. This result marks their first home defeat against Manchester United since July 2020.
