EPL Match Preview, Round 17: Liverpool Vs Manchester United

Written By Albert Echatah

Manchester United, forced to revisit the agonizing memories of the seven-goal massacre from the previous season, travels briefly to Merseyside to play Liverpool on Sunday in front of an expected record-breaking Anfield crowd.

Up to 57,000 spectators are expected for this weekend’s main Premier League match, where the two titans will be looking to make up for some blunders they made throughout the week.

With the exception of the Merseyside derby, the Liverpool hierarchy could hardly have asked for a more tantalizing match to smash their attendance record—especially in light of their recent performance against Manchester United. Jurgen Klopp’s team enters the historic match on Sunday atop the Premier League ladder.

Union SG defeated an experimental XI made up of academy and peripheral players 2-1 on Thursday in the Europa League, but the result was inconsequential because a spot in the round of 16 was already guaranteed.

Player’s to watch

Mohamed Salah has either scored or provided an assist in 4 of his last 5 games. The Egyptian forward has scored 11 goals and provided 7 assists in 16 EPL matches for the merseyside based club. Salah has also netted an additional 3 in the Europa league this season.

Manchester United

Ten Hag will have plenty of time to turn around his team’s terrible domestic results, as the dejected Red Devils suffered a 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Bournemouth last weekend. There will be no European football scheduled for the first half of 2024.

Because of this, Man United starts the weekend five spots and ten points lower than Liverpool in the Premier League standings, and the Red Devils haven’t won away from home against a team in the top eight of the standings for more than two years.

Player’s to watch

In the absence of Bruno Fernandes, the onus is on Marcus Rashford to lead Manchester United to an unlikely victory at Anfield. This season, Rashford has scored 2 goals and provided an assist in all competitions for the EPL Giants.

Team News

The following players are expected to return at different times in 2024: Joel Matip (ACL), Stefan Bajcetic (calf), Andrew Robertson (shoulder), and Thiago Alcantara (hip). Diogo Jota (muscular problem) will also be out for a few more weeks, and Alexis Mac Allister (severe knee wound) will not be able to play against the Red Devils.

Man United supporters will be anxiously awaiting Ten Hag’s latest news, but their team will undoubtedly be without Christian Eriksen (knee), Lisandro Martinez (foot), Casemiro (thigh), Tyrell Malacia (knee), and Jadon Sancho (club suspension). Victor Lindelof (knock), Mason Mount (calf), Anthony Martial (illness), and Marcus Rashford (illness) are also questionable.

United lead in the head-to-head record between the two teams, with 82 wins to Liverpool’s 71; the remaining 58 matches have ended up as draws.

Hot stat

In March, Man United was completely destroyed at Anfield as Liverpool thrashed the Red Devils 7-0, the visitors’ worst-ever Premier League loss.

Possible Lineup

Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Szoboszlai, Endo, Gravenberch; Salah, Nunez, Diaz

Manchester United: Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Evans, Varane, Dalot; McTominay, Amrabat, Mainoo; Antony, Hojlund, Rashford

With most of Liverpool’s star players spared for their defeat to Union SG, Man United might profit from an extra two days to recuperate after their European exertions, but jellied legs shouldn’t be an issue for the current league leaders. Liverpool 3-0 Manchester United
