Despite the surprising final score, defending champions Liverpool started the match aggressively. Inside the opening 10 minutes, a sweeping move saw Alexis Mac Allister seemingly poised to score from close range, only for an incredible, last-ditch block from Elliot Anderson to deny him and keep the game level.
Liverpool continued to dominate the early stages, with Mohamed Salah creating another chance after a fantastic solo run, though Milos Kerkez subsequently volleyed over the bar. However, against the run of play, it was Forest who broke the deadlock. Amidst defensive chaos from a corner kick, Murillo maintained his composure to fire an effort into the corner of the net.
The visitors thought they had quickly doubled their lead when Igor Jesus volleyed home, but the goal was disallowed after he was adjudged to have handled the ball before finishing.
The second half began with the expectation that Liverpool would dominate the play, pushing relentlessly toward the Forest goal. However, against the run of expectation, the visitors remarkably doubled their advantage. The goal came after former Liverpool player Nico Williams orchestrated the attack, setting up Nicolò Savona, who powered the cut-back high into the net.

In a bid to shift the momentum, manager Arne Slot made a decisive substitution, bringing on Hugo Ekitike and removing a defender for an additional attacker. Despite this tactical gamble, Liverpool struggled to gain any meaningful attacking fluency against a resolute Forest side.
The sheer number of attackers on the pitch seemed to undermine Liverpool’s cohesion, and their disorganization was exploited twelve minutes from the end. Omari Hutchinson’s powerful shot was parried by the goalkeeper, and Morgan Gibbs-White calmly guided the rebound with his left foot into the corner. With this third goal, many Anfield fans began to leave the stadium.
The comprehensive 3-0 defeat marked the heaviest home league loss of the Arne Slot era, deepening the team’s struggles in their title defense. For Forest, the unexpected victory provides a significant boost, moving them clear of the relegation zone, and suggesting that manager Sean Dyche may be the ideal choice to secure their Premier League status.
