Darren Fletcher admits that managing Manchester United is a dream come true, yet he remains focused on his temporary role rather than pursuing Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor.

His sudden appointment followed a chaotic weekend at Old Trafford, sparked by a confrontation between Amorim and director Jason Wilcox that led to the manager’s dismissal on Monday.

Fletcher, stepping up from the U18s, will make his managerial debut this Wednesday against Burnley. The interim coach, who played 342 matches for United and has served in various capacities since 2020, described the experience as “surreal.”

“It’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team. I don’t even think it’s in my wildest dreams that that was something that could potentially happen.

“I think even thinking about playing for the club and stuff like that, but to lead out a team is an amazing honour, and something I’m really proud to do.

“Not in the circumstances I expected it to happen, so that obviously is something that doesn’t sit quite easy with me.

“But I’ve got a job to do, and I’ve got to lead the team tomorrow, and think of the great honour and pride in doing that.”

Darren Fletcher is expected to remain at the helm for Manchester United’s FA Cup third-round clash against Brighton this Sunday while the club evaluates its long-term strategy.

According to reports from the Press Association, United is exploring the possibility of bringing back former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or ex-coach Michael Carrick to fill the caretaker role for the remainder of the season.
