Nigeria’s senior men’s national team head coach Eric Chelle has admitted his side must improve their concentration in the closing stages of matches, but maintained that Nigeria were worthy winners of their 3–2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday night.

More Details

Nigeria looked firmly in control after racing into a three-goal lead, with Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, and Ademola Lookman all finding the net to put the Super Eagles in a dominant position.

However, a late fightback from the Carthage Eagles—sparked by goals from Montassar Talbi and Ali Elabdi —briefly threatened to unsettle the Nigerians before they held on to seal qualification for the knockout stages.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Chelle pointed to a lapse in focus as the turning point in the game.

“During this game, we were good for 75 minutes,” Chelle said.

“We scored three goals, but maybe we lost concentration on the corner kick. After that, they put us under high pressure, and there was a penalty. You can say what you want, but the reality is that we deserved this victory.”

The Franco-Malian tactician highlighted Nigeria’s dominance for most of the contest, particularly their command of possession and tempo.

“At half-time, we had about 70 per cent of the ball, and until the 75th minute, we were the best team on the pitch,” he added.

While satisfied with the overall display, Chelle acknowledged that better game management will be crucial as the tournament progresses.

“I am very proud and happy for my players. However, we have to improve in the last 15 minutes,” he said. “You cannot press with high intensity for 90 minutes—it is impossible.”

Chelle concluded by stressing the need for balance and maturity in closing out matches.

“My dream is for my team to do that, but it is not realistic. Seventy-five minutes was very good, but we must learn how to manage and win games better in the final 15 minutes.”

Nigeria’s victory over Tunisia secured their place in the AFCON knockout stages, but Chelle’s comments underline the areas he expects his team to refine as the competition intensifies.
