Given that the Netherlands squad is packed with stars, the 23-year-old would have been unhappy to miss out on a spot after an outstanding debut season in a successful Bologna team.

The Bologna striker, who finished the season with 12 goals and 7 assists in 37 games for the Italian team, has become United’s top target along with Arsenal.

Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners has been replaced by Zirkzee after the striker was forced to withdraw from Ronald Koeman’s squad due to an injury.

Zirkzee will join the Netherlands team on Thursday at their training camp in Wolfsburg.
