Everton are reportedly interested in signing Nathan Aké, a versatile 30-year-old defender from Manchester City.

More Details

Aké, who can play both as a center-back and a left-back, has been with City since 2020 after a £41 million move from Bournemouth.

He has won ten trophies with the club, but his 2024-2025 season was hampered by injuries, limiting him to just ten league matches. He was also an unused substitute in City’s recent 4-0 victory against Wolves.

Following an injury to their preferred left-center back, Jarrad Branthwaite, Everton is looking to strengthen their defense. With left-back Vitaly Mykolenko also sidelined, the team’s need for reinforcements is critical.

In their recent 1-0 loss to Leeds, manager David Moyes was forced to play midfielder James Garner out of position at left-back, underscoring the team’s defensive shortages. It appears that Ake has now become a target to help fill this gap.

After James Tarkowski was sidelined with a hamstring injury, Everton has a limited number of healthy center-backs, with Michael Keane and Jake O’Brien being the only other options available.

Manchester City’s Nathan Aké might be looking for a new club after the arrival of Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves and the versatility of teammate Joško Gvardiol, who can also play left back. Both players could reduce Aké’s playing time.

Guardiola has consistently expressed his desire to make his squad smaller this summer, and he restated this goal before the Wolves game. ‘We should [trim the squad], but it’s difficult because I love all of them; I like all of them and they like to be here. So the situation is not easy but they know it.

‘We have a lot of players, tomorrow there will be two players on the tribune, and when players come back it will be four or five at home and of course it’s not an ideal situation.

‘At the same time we have a lot of games, every season is more and more and you have to have another squad to compete in every single game.’
