Although he managed to play until the break, he did not return for the second half, with Lisandro Martinez coming on as his replacement. Fernandes was later seen watching the remainder of the match from the bench alongside his teammates.
After the match, Ruben Amorim told journalists: “It’s a soft tissue [injury], I think he’s going to lose some games, I don’t know for sure.
“Let’s see. I don’t know. I don’t want to talk about matters you can’t control. He is a guy who is always fit, so he might recover quite well. I think Kobbie Mainoo is out, Bruno is out. We will see. No excuses, we need to win the next game.”
According to The Telegraph, Bruno Fernandes is facing at least a month on the sidelines. This injury sidelines the Manchester United captain for a heavy slate of Premier League fixtures, including matches against Newcastle, Wolves, Leeds, Burnley, and Manchester City. He is also expected to miss the FA Cup tie against Brighton on January 11.

His potential absence from the Manchester derby on January 17 is a significant blow for the club. While there is hope he could return for the January 25 clash with Arsenal, a slower recovery could delay his comeback until the February 1 game against Fulham.
Casemiro’s return provides a timely boost for United’s trip to Newcastle, especially with Kobbie Mainoo still unavailable. While a Casemiro-Ugarte partnership seems the most probable solution in central midfield, manager Ruben Amorim has a tactical alternative: Lisandro Martínez.
The Argentine’s successful cameo in a defensive midfield role against Villa has put him in contention for a starting spot in the pivot. Based on Sofascore data, Martinez misplaced only three of his 32 passes at Villa Park. This efficient display might have secured his spot in Amorim’s starting lineup for the upcoming clash with Eddie Howe’s team.
