FIFA Approves Women’s Club World Cup

The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has approved the creation of a new tournament called the ‘FIFA Women’s Club World Cup’.

The decision to create the tournament was approved on Friday during the FIFA Council Meeting in Doha, Qatar.
The new tournament is expected to promote and project women’s club football on the global stage.
The women’s Champions League is gaining ground across four continents and the continental Champions are expected to participate at the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup.

UEFA Women’s Champions League (Europe), AFC Women’s Club Championship (Asia), Copa Libertadores Femenina (South America), and recently established CAF Women’s Champions League (Africa) are the major Women’s Champions Leagues across different continents.

Apart from the creation of the FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, other decisions were made at the latest FIFA Congress.

The creation of a new a new FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup was endorsed.
The expansion of the Olympic Games Women’s tournament from 12 to 16 teams has also been endorsed.
The principles also include proposals to revise FIFA’s youth tournament inventory – including expanded annual Under-17 tournaments, both for boys and girls.
