Football Really Might Be Coming Home

The adage has become something of a joke in recent years, but the Euros title is one step closer to landing in football’s birthplace.

More Details

England thoroughly defeated Sweden, 4-0, in the first semifinal of the week on Tuesday.

Despite Sweden starting the match on the front foot, England’s scoring dominance continued, with four different goal-scorers putting the match away.

Beth Mead opened the team’s account against the run of play in the 34th minute, and the Swedes could never recover.

Lucy Bronze doubled the scoreline just after halftime, on a set piece that Sweden struggled to defend in the box.

Super substitute Alessia Russo made it 3-0 in the 68th minute, scoring a filthy backheel nutmeg off a blocked chance.

Fran Kirby finished the scoring in the 76th minute after a Swedish defensive breakdown that more than sealed the game.

There is still one more semifinal to be played on Wednesday between France and Germany, but the conversation now turns to whether the Lionesses can be stopped.

Meanwhile…

The English Lionesses already broke the goal-scoring record in Euros group stage, and they have the power of the home crowd behind them.

With her opening goal, Beth Mead tied a Euros single-player scoring record, and Russo now has four goals in the tournament without ever starting a match.

This is exactly what the English Football Association (FA) envisioned in the build-up to the Euros — the Lionesses are flying and could net their first major tournament win in the program’s history.

The job is not completely done, but what England has accomplished so far in the tournament is worth celebrating on its own.
