Written By Onyeka Daniel

In a move that might not be so shocking to his ardent followers, Spanish striker, Diego Costa could be set for a move back to Europe if his recent post on his social media page is to be believed.

More Details

Costa, who spent three seasons at English Premier League side, Chelsea, where he netted 59 goals across three full seasons, and led the Blues to the English Premier League titles in 2015 and 2017.

He also played for Spanish side, Atletico Madrid, scoring a total of 83 goals across two spells for Los Rojiblancos, most famously firing 36 goals in the 2013-14 season – spearheading the club to the domestic League title and to the Final of the UEFA Champions League that same year.

The 24-time capped Spain international mutually agreed to cancel his contract at Atletico Madrid a year ago, before spending four months without a club. The striker then penned a contract with Atletico Mineiro, whom he helped propel to the Brazilian league title – their first in 50 years and just the second in their history.

Costa netted five goals in 19 appearances for the club, where he played alongside former Brazil international and Porto striker Hulk. The 33-year-old has now posted a message on Instagram that has fuelled rumours that he may once again be on the move.

Costa posted a ‘Happy New Year’ message in his native Portuguese language – having been born in Brazil – alongside emojis of a plane and a Spanish flag.

A move to Barcelona cannot be ruled out as the Blaugrana are in dire need of a striker but his fiery personality might give them a rethink before offering him a contract while Atletico Madrid can also be eyeing a move for their former player, that is if Diego Simeone gives his blessings to such move.

Atletico Madrid coach, Diego Simeone has said that he won’t stand in the way of wantaway English defender, Kierran Trippier and his desire to leave the club.

“He is an extraordinary footballer that has given us a lot,” Simeone said after his side’s win in the first game of the new year against Rayo Vallecano. “But as I have said, it depends on him. “We hope that Trippier can stay but I don’t know if you can’t hold anyone back in life.”

Trippier is under contract at Atletico Madrid until 2023, and given he is 31 years of age, Atleti are unlikely to stand in his way given they can bring in a significant fee for him this month.

English Premier League side, Newcastle United are said to be highly interested and should be able to pay whatever fee is required while Manchester United, who were really interested during the last summer transfer window might also make a play for him if he becomes available.
