“It worked out,” Forsberg told reporters of his 97th-minute stunner. “So, fantastic feeling to get the win in that last moment for us, after some hard weeks. Very, very, very, very good feeling.
“Everybody should be proud of themselves for what we did today.”
Although the Red Bulls mostly used their reserve players, they held their own against the 12-time Mexican champions. The Mexican team dominated possession with 62.1% and forced goalkeeper AJ Marcucci to make some impressive saves.
Head coach Sandro Schwarz eventually brought in his star players. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting entered the game in the 59th minute, followed by Forsberg 14 minutes later.

In the game’s final moments, Choupo-Moting was fouled by former LA Galaxy midfielder Daniel Aguirre just outside the penalty box, which set the stage for Forsberg to score the winning goal.
“I would say it was a great fight from our team,” Schwarz told reporters of the hard-fought victory. “… When you’re always in the game, you have to keep the focus to keep the intensity. Then you have the chance to win with the last situation.
“That was great. It’s a really good feeling.”
