French Open: Iga Swiatek Passes Zheng Qinwen’s Test

Polish star Iga Swiatek reached the final eight, battling by China’s Zheng 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-2 and extending her win streak to 32 matches.

It was a real battle for the number one against Zheng Qinwen as the 2020 champion dropped her first set of the tournament in their Round of 16 match.

After a five game win, Swiatek struggled losing to Zheng’s great display who eventually won the first set 7-5.

The second set started glowingly for the
20-year old top seed as she led 3-0 before a time out was called for the 19-year-old who returned to be bageled at the end of the set.

By the third set, Swiatek continued the tempo to win the set and the contest.

Swiatek, who is into her third straight Roland-Garros quarter-final, will play American Jessica Pegula, the No 11 seed, in the last eight.

“She’s playing amazing tennis. I’ve never had a chance to play her and I was surprised by some of her shots. Her topspin is amazing, huge congrats to her, it’s a huge tournament, it’s a good result. I’m pretty happy I could come back after a pretty frustrating first set when I held the lead, proud of myself that I’m still in the tournament.” Swiatek said after the match.

Ige Swiatek whose birthday is this Tuesday has revealed after qualifying for the quarter finals of the French Open that she will be supporting her favourite, Rafael Nadal against Novak Djokovic in the quarter final.

“As everyone knows I am a Rafael Nadal fan and I would love to watch his match against Novak Djokovic,” Swiatek said in her BBC Sport column.

The two heavyweight go head to head in an epic tie which will be their 59 meeting on Tuesday evening. And the Polish star who have always dotted on the Spaniard says she will be rooting for him though she will be watching from the TV.

“I will be too curious about what will happen not to see it, but I will watch on TV rather than at the stadium.

“I watched Rafa’s last match against Felix Auger-Aliassime, although not the full game because it was so long.

“During the tournament I need to be focused on my own preparations, my rest and my routine. That’s why I won’t be going to watch the quarter-final in the stadium.

“But, like always, I’ll be rooting for Rafa.”
