Iga Swiatek beat Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semi finals at Roland Garros for the second time in her career on Wednesday.

Swiatek’s win puts her in sole possession of third in the list of longest WTA winning streaks this century; she shared 32 with Justine Henin’s effort between 2007-2008.

The Pole who turns 21 on Tuesday swung quickly into the game to win the game point and it was looking like vintage Iga until the American turn the tide to win and make one game apiece.

It however didn’t turn the Rome champion from taking her focus off the prize. She kept the pace despite few moments of errors to win the first set.

She saved a break point early in the second set before opening up a 3-1 lead herself with a backhand winner up the line.

Pegula managed to save three match points in the eighth game as she tried to make Swiatek serve the match out, but the former champion sealed victory with another perfectly-placed backhand.


“I guess flying wasn’t a good option, because she was playing so low. I actually needed to not fly,” Swiatek responds jokingly to a post-match question.

“It was really hard as sometimes she was changing the rhythm. I’m happy, I was playing with good dynamics and pushed her back a fair bit.”

Daria Kasatkina seals her first Slam semifinal berth winning all-Russian battle earlier on Wednesday, Kasatkina reached her maiden Grand Slam semi-final with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) victory over fellow Russian Veronika Kudermetova.

World number 20 Kasatkina, playing in her third career quarter-final at the Slams but first since 2018, has made the semis without dropping a set.

“You could see that the match was really nervous and tight, especially the tie-break,” said Kasatkina, a former junior champion in Paris.

Daria Kasatkina faces Iga Swiatek who has dominated her in all three 2022 meetings but never faced on clay.

They have meet four times with the Pole ahead 3-1. Their meeting on Thursday is the 5th time in less than a year.
