Liverpool FC Women head coach Gareth Taylor has welcomed the club’s latest signings and outlined his expectations ahead of Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against London City Lionesses at St Helens Stadium.

The Reds returned to training at the end of December after a short festive break, with Taylor stressing the importance of balancing rest and readiness as the team prepares for the second half of the season.

“Firstly, I would like to say Happy New Year to all of our supporters, and I hope you had a good and peaceful time with your families over the festive period,” Taylor wrote in his latest column.

“We had a good break and were back in for training on December 30 and 31. It was important the players had some rest, but not too much, so we could hit the ground running in the new year.”

A key focus during the January window has been strengthening the squad, with Alice Bergstrom and Jennifer Falk arriving to add depth and quality.

“A big part of that is getting some additional parts into the squad, and we’ve managed to do that,” Taylor said.

“We need to get as much quality onto the pitch as possible, and I’m really pleased with these new additions. They will bring some much-needed quality.”

Reflecting on a challenging first half of the campaign, Taylor acknowledged the difficulties faced both on and off the pitch, while praising his players for their resilience.

“We had a lot to deal with in the backend of the first part of the season,” he noted.

“The Christmas break gave us the opportunity to pause and reflect, and I’ve always said how proud I am of the players who have come through those difficult moments.”

The Liverpool boss confirmed the club remains active in the transfer market, despite the challenges that come with January recruitment.

“Are we looking to do additional signings this month? Yes,” Taylor admitted.
“We know how difficult it is, but that doesn’t stop us. We are fighting as hard as we can to climb back up the table, and extra help is going to be important.”

There was also positive news on the injury front, with captain Grace Fisk back in contention and Gemma Bonner available for selection. However, Leanne Kiernan and Hannah Silcock remain sidelined for now.

Despite their league position, Taylor believes there have been encouraging signs in performances so far.

“Regardless of where we are in the table, there have been games where the way the team has played has been positive,” he said.
“We’ve faced some quality opponents and come close to getting that first WSL win.”

Liverpool begin 2026 with a home fixture against London City Lionesses, a match Taylor expects to be a stern test.

“They’ve spent a lot of money and have a new manager, so it’s a new proposition,” he added.
“That makes the challenge more difficult, but hopefully we can maximise the advantage of facing a new team with a new coach.”
