Gregg Berhalter: Ex-USMNT Coach Named New Chicago Fire Head Coach

Former USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter has been officially appointed as the head coach and director of football of Chicago Fire FC.

Berhalter, who most recently led the US men’s national team, was the sports director and head coach of the Columbus Crew from 2013 to 2018. He becomes the club’s tenth head coach in history.

Reporting directly to owner and chairman Joe Mansueto, he will be in charge of all athletic operations for the Fire, including the academy, MLS NEXT Pro affiliate Chicago Fire FC II, and the main squad.
“After a thorough and detailed search that included a number of exceptional candidates, it became clear that Gregg Berhalter was the right choice to lead our sporting operations,”
Joe Mansueto said in a press release. “His previous success in MLS, where he thrived in a dual role, and his experience leading the US men’s national team over the last six years make him an ideal fit for our vision for the club moving forward.”
At the conclusion of the 2024 MLS regular season, Berhalter will formally take over as Chicago Fire coach. On Saturday, October 19 (Decision Day), the team will play Nashville SC in their final game under Frank Klopas.

After over six years as the head coach of the US men’s national team, Berhalter, who has over thirty years of experience as a player, head coach, and sporting executive, is back in MLS.
After taking over as head coach in December 2018, Berhalter guided the USMNT to the 2022 FIFA World Cup Round of 16.
Following The Yanks group-stage exit at the 2024 Copa América, he was immediately relieved of his duties in July.
