Former French international Robert Pires has been tipped to give it a try even as he approaches his ripe old age of fifty.

Pires was an important component of Arsenal’s invincibles that went the whole season unbeaten on their way to lifting the Premier League in 2004.

The 48 year old scored 87 goals in 287 games for the Gunners between the year 2000 and 2006 before leaving to join Villarreal after a fall out with Arsene Wenger stemming from him being substituted in the Champions League final that year where they lost to Barcelona.

The former Marseille player has been constantly training with his former side and at a point held a coaching role in the club.

Former teammate Ray Parlour attested to the level of brilliance he still plays with while Jack Wilshere and Darren Bent also contributed to the compliments.

“Believe it or not, Robert could still play football,” said Parlour, who joined Friday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.

“He’s that fit, it’s unbelievable.”

“He used to come back and train with us when he retired,” Wilshere told Drivetime.

“He must have been in his early 40s and, I promise you, he didn’t look out of place. He still could have played.”

Darren Bent shared a dressing room with the World Cup winner at Aston Villa and being a Gooner had nothing but premised for the two time Premier League winner.

“I played with him at Aston Villa. I walked into the dressing room and I forgot that he was there – I was star struck.

“I sat next to him in the changing room and I asked him the most amount of questions, being an Arsenal fan.

“Even in training, his touches…”

“He was 41 and, I promise you, he did not look out of place, I’m not exaggerating,” Wilshere went on to say.

“He would still beat players, he would turn away from players, and that’s just like timing and touch.”

Age is just a number, after all.

Pires had a hugely successful career as he also won the FA Cup twice while winning the World Cup and European Championships with France as well as two Confederation Cup titles.

Cristiano Ronaldo Jr has officially joined the Manchester United Academy and has chosen the iconic number 7 jersey just like his father.
