“He Wants To Sign A New Deal And We Must Respect The Manager’s Decision”
Written By Onyeka Daniel
According to recent reports emanating from Italy, all is not well between AC Milan coach, Paulo Fonseca and some of his players, and perhaps that is why French defender, Theo Hernandez was left on the bench in the goalless draw against Genoa at the San Siro over the weekend. This has caused speculations that the club could decide sell him off in the next summer transfer window.

Consequently, his agent has flown into town to hold discussions with the club. According to recent reports, the club has been back tracking on their plans to hand the player a new contract extension in the immediate future, even though he remains of interest to some of Europe’s most high-profile clubs. There have reportedly been discussions about the possibility of a new contract on-and-off since March.

But there has been little progress on that front over the last few months. One of Milan’s highest earners, and one of the club’s standout performers over the last few seasons, Hernandez has not quite been able to replicate his usual form during the 2024-25 campaign. But the agent met with the club today and insists they ‘did not talk about a contract renewal, but he wants to remain and sign a new deal.’
“We did not talk about a contract renewal, but about fiscal matters,” said Quilon. “The intention is very clear, which is for him to remain and sign a new deal. We have said it many times.” As for the decision to drop Theo Hernandez, which is not the first time that Fonseca has taken this action, the agent was diplomatic. “These are not decisions that are down to the player.
“He respects his teammates and when one player is on the field, the other inevitably isn’t. “It happened with Rafael Leao too, we must respect the decisions of the coach.” Theo Hernandez has a contract with Milan that only runs to June 2026, so an agreement over a new deal must be reached soon or his sale will become inevitable to avoid losing him as a free agent.
The Rossoneri have reportedly proposed an increased salary to €5m per season plus bonuses, an improvement on his current €4m, while he’s reportedly pushing to be on par with Leao, who is the club’s highest earner on a €5 million base salary with performance-based bonuses that will be triggered throughout the year, and not just at the end of the season, as it normally happens.
Hence it could rise to as much as €8m-€9m a year. Meanwhile, Milan ultras staged a furious protest outside the private event to celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary, forcing the directors to arrive via a secret entrance. The fans were already angry after the draw with Genoa and jeered the team off the pitch at the final whistle, but the majority of their fury is aimed at the President.
There were also a series of banners urging Gerry Cardinale to sell the club, claiming he was “unworthy” of the history of AC Milan. It did not end there, because for the first time ever, ultras have staged a protest outside the entrance to a private event marking the 125th anniversary of the club’s foundation. “Players without hunger or dignity, you perfectly represent these owners” was one banner placed outside the event.

“Incompetent directors, club without ambition. You are not worthy of our history.” Sky Sport Italia report the situation is so tense that directors including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paolo Scaroni and Cardinale were urged to arrive at the event via a side entrance to avoid the crowd of ultras. When coach Paulo Fonseca drove up and posed for pictures, there was silence from the fans.

This is probably because they primarily blame some players and the club owners for their current predicament. Among those who were applauded by the fans present were teenage striker Francesco Camarda and legends Franco Baresi and Pietro Paolo Virdis. The team will have a chance at redemption when they travel away to face Hellas Verona on Friday in their next Serie A match.
