Despite not having much warning about his first Serie A debut at his new club, it was an excellent outing for Josep Martinez as he kept a clean sheet against his former team at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium to help Inter climb to the top of the Serie A table.

In a sudden twist, an Injury to the first-choice keeper handed Martinez this opportunity. The former Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach keeper suffered a thumb fracture in training this week, forcing Martinez to the starting line-up.
Against his former team, he was excellent and after the win yesterday, he spoke to the press where he revealed that he “always has to be ready” after a successful Serie A debut. The Spaniard spoke to InterTV after the match, and the Spaniard admitted that it has been a very emotional week.
“You know how Sommer got injured, and I had to play. It’s very emotional because this was the first start for me,” Martinez added. “And then I was going up against my former teammates. But I tried to face this match in a normal way.”
He further noted that “I’ve been here for many months, training in preparation for this moment.” The 26-year-old said that “I’m learning a lot. This is how the role of the goalkeeper is. You come in when there’s a problem, and you always have to be ready.”
“That’s what I’ve been trying to do over the last few months. I knew that I’d have an opportunity in the Coppa no matter what,” noted the Spaniard. “So I was already focused.” He further added. He is expected to be in goal again for the Coppa Italia clash against Lazio on Tuesday.
For the agent of the goalkeeper, h also said that he is “not surprised” at the breakout debut of his client in an interview with TuttoMercatoWeb. The agent, Sergio Barila also added that “Inter and Simone Inzaghi will decide” on Martinez’s future at the club.
Apart from keeping a clean sheet, the 26-year-old also made a couple impressive saves to help the Nerazzurri to the three points. Martinez’s agent Sergio Barila said that he was “0% surprised” by the performance from Martinez. “Because I know him very well.”

“When we decided to sign with Inter, we knew that it would be a very important step for his career,” Barila added. “And that he was ready for it.” The agent noted that “Throughout his career, we’ve always tried to make the best decisions, for his present and his future.”
“Joining a club of the highest level, and with the highest demand to win, was a challenge,” Barila noted. “But we trusted him. For my part I’ve always had a very clear idea in my head of what Josep’s physical, technical, and mental abilities are. He was fully prepare for the work.”

Meanwhile, as far as Martinez’s future at Inter, Barila said that “the coach and the club will decide what’s best for Inter. My opinion is that he will be a keeper of a guaranteed level for any top-level club,” he concluded.
