Atlético Madrid midfielder Hector Herrera is in line for a contract renewal at the Wanda Metropolitano after an impressive run of form in 2022.

More Details

The Mexican international joined Los Rojiblancos on a free transfer from Porto in 2019, although under Diego Simeone, he has mostly played a supporting role.

As he approached the final year of his contract in 2021/22, he had only made 20 La Liga starts in his first two seasons, demonstrating his squad role.

The 31-year-old, though, has given Simeone reason for thinking after being drafted in as a starting option in Atlético Madrid’s last three games.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Los Rojiblancos will begin talks with Herrera’s agents in the coming weeks about a possible 12-month extension.

Herrera has already claimed that no concrete negotiations about his future have taken place, and that he will keep an open mind in the coming months as additional offers from Major League Soccer are expected to arrive.

Roy Keane, a former Manchester United player, has urged the club to make a summer approach for Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone.

Keane, who captained the Red Devils to nine major honours during his playing career at Old Trafford, has been an outspoken critic over the direction United has moved in recent years.

His former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked as United head coach earlier this season with Ralf Rangnick coming in as temporary replacement.

However, with Rangnick expected to move into a football consultancy role ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, Manchester United need a permanent coach, and Keane believes Simeone would be ideal.
