More Details

Herrera will return to the Americas nine years after leaving Pachuca in 2013, bringing him closer to his homeland of Mexico than ever before. He joined Atletico Madrid after six seasons at Porto, where he was a regular for El Tri at the international level.

For the most of his three years in Madrid, the center midfielder has been a member of Diego Simeone’s squad. Herrera has made 71 appearances in his three seasons with the club, scoring once and assisting on four occasions.

Herrera’s season has followed a similar path, albeit he has recently pleased fans with great displays against Manchester United and Celta Vigo. He has 744 minutes of activity in 20 games this season, however nearly a third of those minutes were spent on the bench.

With his current contract set to expire at the conclusion of the season, he was unable to persuade Simeone to offer him a new one. As a result, he is free to join Houston without having to pay a transfer fee.

Herrera is one of a number of Atlético Madrid players who are out of contract at the end of the season, including Sime Vrsaljko, Luis Suarez and Felipe.

Spanish giants Atlético Madrid have suffered yet another injury blow amid difficulties in the treatment room of late.

Los Rojiblancos have picked up recently, winning both of their last two La Liga outings and putting on a largely impressive display against Manchester United in the Champions League.

The upturn in form was much needed after a stretch of disappointing results, contributing to an already disappointing campaign for Diego Simeone and his men.

Though, some of Atleti’s recent outings have taken their toll, and they were already headed into this weekend’s tricky away clash with top four rivals Real Betis with as many as five injuries.
