This homecoming suggests a desire to reclaim his legacy and address what many perceive as a chapter left incomplete. Héctor Herrera, better known as “HH,” has officially returned to the Houston Dynamo for a second stint, marking a high-profile homecoming for the Major League Soccer franchise.
While fans have met the news of his re-signing with significant enthusiasm, the veteran midfielder has remained firm on one major point: his international career. Herrera has categorically ruled out a return to the Mexican national team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stating that a final appearance on the world stage is no longer part of his professional ambitions.
“I’m not thinking about reaching another World Cup. Right now, I have three priorities in my life: my personal ones are here in Houston (my kids), and on the sporting side, I’m at the team where I want to be and I feel at home,” Herrera explained during his official presentation press conference with the Texas club.
Despite having played a pivotal role for the Mexico national team throughout three consecutive FIFA World Cup cycles (2014, 2018, and 2022), the 35-year-old veteran midfielder has seen his international career stall significantly. His presence on the pitch for El Tri has been nonexistent since September 10, 2023, a date that coincided with his second season during his initial tenure with the Houston Dynamo.

The drought in playing time has transitioned into a complete absence from the roster; he has yet to receive a summons from manager Javier Aguirre since the commencement of Mexico’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in July 2024.
This prolonged exclusion suggests a shift in the national team’s tactical direction, as the experienced playmaker remains sidelined while the squad navigates its path toward the upcoming global tournament.
“What made me come back was that my kids are happy here. Also, the story between the club and me hadn’t ended the way I wanted-it left an impression of a person I’m not. That motivated me to return and close the chapter properly. I want to stay for years to win titles,” Herrera added.
