Home Countries Reign Supreme In International Play

Looking at the results of three of the most recent major friendly soccer tournaments, it appears home-field advantage is alive and well.

More Details

In addition to the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT’s) SheBelieves Cup victory, England won the inaugural Arnold Clark Cup (ACC) and France took home the hardware at the Tournoi de France.

Center back Millie Bright shared the ACC Golden Boot honors with Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas, lending a hint of absurdity to the postgame festivities.

Regardless, England had a tournament to be proud of, executing a smothering defensive game plan and finding the goals they needed at the moment (even if from the defense). The Lionesses’ 3-1 win over Germany in the finale showed just how far they’ve come.

Spain also found their form against Canada in their final match of the break, winning 1-0 thanks to a more cohesive team effort.

Setting up more intriguing storylines for the Euros, France stood out at their home tournament, finishing the event undefeated.

Marie-Antoinette Katoto added to her case as one of the best strikers in the world, scoring twice against The Netherlands to seal the title.

France is likely known best in the U.S. for their “golden generation,” but the core of the current group features a number of names not on the team in 2019, and they look ready to contend for the Euro crown.

In Portugal, 2016 and 2020 Olympic silver medalists Sweden won the Algarve Cup, though it took a penalty shootout to get there.

The Netherlands won the last Euros at home, with a massive boost from the local Dutch crowd.

This bodes well for England, who are hoping to hit the stratosphere in support for women’s football this summer. But don’t expect other contenders to go quietly.
