Written By Onyeka Daniel
It looks like Inter Milan will not be escaping this November international break without a scratch as the reigning Serie A champions have already been hit with an injury concern. Hakan Calhanoglu was unable to continue past half-time in the 0-0 draw between Turkey and Wales in the Nations League on Saturday night. Apparently, the Nerazzurri midfielder appeared to still be struggling with his recent thigh injury.

The former AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder led out as captain for his country at the Kadir Has Stadium in Kayseri, but was substituted at half-time by Vincenzo Montella. He recently missed a run of games for Inter, including the 4-4 thriller against Juventus, after picking up an injury to the adductor muscle in his thigh early on in the 1-0 victory away against Roma, and they certainly managed to cope without his presence.

According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, the 30-year-old felt the same discomfort as he made his way down the tunnel at the interval against Wales on Saturday night. Turkey have another game away against Montenegro on Tuesday evening, but he has now returned to Milan for further scan, to determine the extent of the injury. Inter will play away against Hellas Verona immediately after the international break.
Right after that, a visit from RB Leipzig in the Champions League and then a trip to play Fiorentina in Serie A the following weekend. Depending on the result, it is probably that he will skip the first two games and return for the Fiorentina clash. For the player, he warned that he is ‘not completely ready’ after the injury concern, as he prepares for a new round of medical checks to get to the bottom of the issue.
Speaking to the press at full-time, Calhanoglu revealed himself that he felt the same discomfort as the injury that kept him out of three matches towards the end of October. “I felt a tingling sensation, I didn’t want to take any risks,” he said after full-time following his half-time withdrawal. He continued: “Given the intense fixture schedule, my time for rest was short. It’s only been two weeks since my injury.
“But the same area hurt again and started to sting. I didn’t want to take any risks, I’m not completely ready.” He further added. In a related development, Inter winger Tajon Buchanan got his first competitive minutes of the 2024-25 season as Canada beat Suriname 1-0 away in the CONCACAF Nations League quarter-finals over the weekend, and he could be set for a his first game in Inter colors after the break.
The former Club Brugge wing-back played the final 12 minutes of Canada’s Nations League win after coming on as a substitute for Ali Ahmed. Junior Hoilett had scored the game’s only goal a few minutes earlier. Buchanan has not featured at all for Inter in any competition so far this season after fracturing his tibia while away on international duty with Canada ahead of the Copa America over the summer.

He was expected to miss somewhere between four and six months of action while the bone healed, but there was a gap of 139 days between Buchanan’s two most recent appearances. Simone Inzaghi has included Buchanan on the bench for the last five club matches, including four in Serie A and the Champions League win over Arsenal, but the 25-year-old is still awaiting his first minutes of action at club level this season.
