Huge Spike In Injury Withdrawals: Tuchel In The Eye Of The Storm

Written By Albert Echatah

Premier League club insiders have allegedly pointed the finger at the FA and Thomas Tuchel for the sharp increase in injury withdrawals from this month’s England team.

More Details

The Three Lions, who are currently three points behind the Euro 2004 winners in the race for promotion back to League A, will play Greece in Athens on Thursday in a crucial UEFA Nations League match.

Three days following the trip to the Greek capital, England will play the Republic of Ireland at Wembley to close out their campaign. Depending on how Thursday’s match goes, this match might be extremely significant once more. However, since he announced his final England team last week, interim manager Lee Carsley has been hit hard by injury casualties.

Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka of Arsenal, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish of Manchester City, Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill of Chelsea, Trent Alexander-Arnold of Liverpool, and Aaron Ramsdale of Southampton have all left the team after suffering minor injuries over the weekend.

Despite being named as Gareth Southgate’s permanent replacement last month, Tuchel will not officially take over as England manager until January 1. As a result, Carsley will have a challenging time motivating the remaining players for the two games that remain in the new year.

According to the Telegraph, insiders from a number of Premier League clubs feel that the large number of pull-outs is due to the delay in Tuchel’s official takeover.

Given that so much depends on the outcome and that a loss would probably render the Ireland match a dead rubber, there is also the idea that even more players will depart the camp following the encounter against Greece.

According to the Telegraph’s source on the matter, “If Tuchel were in charge of these games, at least half of those players would still be with the squad.”

“That’s not to say they don’t have injuries or issues, but players aren’t going to take any risks when they know the current manager won’t be there after this break.

“Players are physically and mentally tired, and many of them, and their clubs, see this as the only opportunity for a break before a run of a lot of games packed into a short space of time.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more withdrawals after the first game against Greece.”
