Dean Smith, the head coach of Charlotte FC, has frequently stressed the value of not getting caught up in the highs and lows that come with a season.

The club has already gone through a tremendous emotional rollercoaster after just three games, whether it was the thrill of winning their season opener in front of almost 62,000 spectators or the letdown of giving up a late-season contender goal in the 80th minute.

Smith says his squad should not let defeat make them act irrationally; instead, they should stay determined and believe that their hard work will eventually pay off.

“I told you from the moment I came here that I won’t get too high when we win, and I didn’t after New York, and I won’t get too low when we don’t,” said reiterated Smith. “It’s the nature of football at times. Some decisions have gone for us, some have gone against us so far already but as long as we keep performing to our capabilities, then I certainly believe we’ll win a lot more games than we lose.”

Despite playing in two consecutive home openers against Vancouver and Toronto, Charlotte’s early troubles haven’t been on the defensive end, as they’ve generally limited their opponents’ chances.

“We’ve done our job in keeping crowds quiet, and it’s certainly not not been any any anywhere near the atmosphere that we create it at the Bank of America,” smirked Smith.

Meanwhile…

Kevin Long, a centre back of Birmingham City in the English Championship, has joined Toronto FC, the team announced on Tuesday. His deal is set to expire in 2024, with an option in 2025.

Along with No. 1 SuperDraft choice Tyrese Spicer and Honduran international midfielder Deybi Flores, the 33-year-old former Irish international is Toronto’s third offseason addition.

“We are thrilled to welcome Kevin to the Toronto FC family,” head coach John Herdman said in a release. “Kevin’s experience will be a welcome addition to TFC’s back line. He’s here to help rebuild the club and is hungry for success.”
