“I Don’t See It” — Michael Owen Aims Slight Dig At Kane Over Career Decision
Written By Albert Echatah
Former England forward Michael Owen is sticking with his opinion that Harry Kane was wrong to leave the Premier League and Tottenham for Bayern Munich.

Kane’s move to the German Bundesliga last summer paid off right away, as he won the domestic league title with Bayern.

Even though Owen also played abroad for a year with Real Madrid, he has noted that his situation when he left Liverpool was different from Harry Kane’s move.
“Harry Kane is just lethal, he’s a brilliant finisher,” Owen said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast. “I disagreed with him going to Germany. I was outspoken about that. I still think he was nuts.
“You’re on the verge of being the all-time Premier League goal scorer, you’ve got kids that are all in school. I mean, I just couldn’t see it. I don’t see it.
Owen questioned the value of Kane winning the Bundesliga with a dominant Bayern team, suggesting it was less of an achievement than staying in England to break scoring records. “A great achievement would have been becoming the top scorer ever in the Premier League, that would have been unbelievable,” he added.
Despite a move to Bayern Munich, Harry Kane could still break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal record if he returns to the league. Kane, who is currently 47 goals behind Shearer’s record of 260, will be nearly 34 when his contract with Bayern expires in 2027. Among active players, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah is the closest to both Kane and Shearer, with 187 Premier League goals.

Following Kane’s departure from London to join Bayern, two of his former teammates have since joined Tottenham. This summer, Mathys Tel made his loan spell at Spurs permanent, and João Palhinha is also on loan at Tottenham with an option to make the move permanent in 2026.
“He’s got great potential,” Kane said of French forward Tel after Bayern’s match against Spurs in pre-season. “Whether he’s playing as a left winger or a striker, he gets into dangerous areas, he can finish the ball well, and he’s good one-v-one.
“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him – he’s going to the Premier League, he’s still extremely young although he has a lot of experience here, he still has to develop and improve, he knows that and he works hard to do that, so I just want him to go and enjoy himself, have confidence and hopefully he can shine in the Premier League.”
